This morning as I thought about what invitations to present for morning play, I remembered that several of our friends have been showing curiosity towards letters and words. I had made a note earlier in the week to offer more invitations for practicing the letters of our name since there seemed to be interest for that in the group.
I put out a couple of small white boards and dry erase pens on one of the play tables, and the kiddos picked it as their first activity shortly after arriving for the day. After finding their names on the boards they collectively engaged in a highly focused and concentrated ~15 minute effort to replicate my writing. After that they decided to move on to drawing mountains and dinosaurs and other such stuff. These small white boards are a great medium for practicing their names and other creations as they can start over and over again with just a swipe of the eraser. I'll be offering this white board invitation to practice the letters of our names with more consistency these next few weeks so that those who have interest can develop that skill.
After our morning snack the next invitation the group engaged with was the sea creature table. They took turns guiding story lines of the creatures they were familiar with like the sea otters and whales, as well as learned the names of some new creatures they hadn't met yet.
Our afternoon was spent engaging in lots of different animal play, with the horses again being one of the most favored animals to story play with. There was also tree climbing and and sliding, hammock swinging, and foraging for some late summer harvest in the garden.
Towards the later part of the afternoon the group decided it was time for some water play in the pool. They even collaborated together to make private hot tub pools for the horses.
Enjoy our photo journal of the day!
